Having drops in software quality doesn't surprise me at all. Anybody that used Mac OS back in the System 7 days likely remembers seeing the bomb message and getting intimate with macbugs (G^FINDER) to try to save your work.

I think the only way you'll see a dramatic rise in quality would be if software becomes their core business (instead of hardware)... which isn't happening.
