Australia has been doing this for years for mobile data plans. Even though data plans aren't as expensive as they use to be, Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, eBay, LinkedIn & MySpace are all "free" on the Optus network.

interesting. do you know if they are paying Optus? does Optus have competition in major Australia markets?

Optus is one of several major mobile telcos in Australia. Telstra also offers free Facebook, IIRC.

I'm not sure whether FB is paying Optus/Telstra, but I would think so.
